As a Vancouver BC Child Photographer, my experience has mainly been in the studio. Most photographers start out with natural light because it’s readily available and you don’t need expensive lighting equipment to take a picture. I started with studio lights and shied away from taking outdoor pictures professionally because I didn’t feel confident that I could see natural light properly. And the fact that it changes constantly scares me because I would not have the control as I do with studio lights. After shooting with studio lights for three years and training myself to see light, I decided I was ready and took my family on a weekend trip to Happy Valley Lavender & Herb Farm, Victoria, BC to practice on my kids.
When we arrived at the location, I was dismayed to see a wall of shrubs blocking the sun as it set. With only 15 minutes left of photo opportunity before the lavender fields were covered in shadows, I dressed Angeline, rushed her into the fields and started shooting. There was only time for one set-up and one child.
What I saw through my lenses was absolutely magical.
I present my 2.5-year-old daughter Angeline in the lavender fields.
