As a seasoned newborn photographer in Seattle, I often get requests from clients for photographs of their newborn’s smiles. I LOVE to capture babies smiles and we do everything to make that happen but I cannot guarantee them.
That’s because newborn smiles are spontaneous and often happen during the state of drowsiness or the REM stages of sleep (another good reason why we want your newborns nice and sleepy instead of awake and alert). Neonatal smiles are real smiles, have no emotional content and are not caused by gas as most believed. Experts believe neonatal smiling is a newborn reflex designed for survival. A smiling newborn is more likely to be held and fed. We can only hope to have our cameras ready a smile happens.
At Camila’s newborn photo session, we captured more photos of her smiles than any other newborn sessions preceding hers. There were six photos! Most newborn sessions will have one smiling picture.
Congratulations to the family and welcome to the world, Camila!
